JUSTICE FOR EAST SAINT LOUIS

Our Mission

Thrive East Saint Louis is a community-led environmental justice movement responding to decades of environmental racism. We are committed to empowering the local community through unified action and strategic advocacy. We believe in a future where every neighborhood is revitalized, voices are heard, and a sustainable environment is the standard for all residents. Our movement is built on the strength of our collective stories and the determination to create lasting, positive change.

Community Stories

"It's not a coincidence that we move from one end of East Saint Louis to another and we're still fighting the same fight"

The Reed Family

Dr. Cindy Reed reflects on growing up in East St. Louis, where environmental hazards followed her family from one neighborhood to another. Red industrial dust coated the playground across from her childhood home, while chronic flooding and sewage-contaminated water later made her family’s next home unsafe. Her experiences reveal that access to parks and green space is not enough when Black communities continue to face industrial pollution, neglected infrastructure, and decades of divestment. Dr. Reed’s story connects these conditions to the larger history of environmental racism and calls for systemic change that gives East St. Louis residents the healthy, well-maintained communities they deserve.
